Community Invited to “Walk It Off” at Alton Baker Park on Wednesday Evenings from June 4 Through August 20

Now in its fifth year, free weekly fitness event attendees can meet up with friends, get some exercise, eat healthy snacks, pick up recipe cards, and more

(EUGENE, Ore.)—In an effort to bring Lane County residents together to walk, run, or bike for fitness this summer, PacificSource Health Plans is once again hosting its popular Walk It Off Wednesdays at Eugene’s Alton Baker Park. Now in its fifth year, the free weekly fitness event kicks off at 5 p.m. on June 4 and continues each Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. through Aug. 20.

Participants can run, walk, or jog, as well as ride a bike, skateboard or scooter. Additionally, participants with leashed dogs and strollers are welcome.

Maps will be available identifying a variety of pre-measured routes ranging from 1.8 miles to 5.2 miles in length. PacificSource will also have healthy recipe cards, fruit and infused water available for participants at no charge. The first 500 participants 18 and older who register on site will receive a free Walk It Off T-shirt.

On July 9, participants will also have the opportunity to turn their miles into money for FOOD for Lane County. As part of its sponsorship of Walk It Off Wednesdays, PacificSource will donate $1 for every mile logged – up to $1,000. Miles logged during the July 9 event will be self-reported using a mileage card available at the FOOD for Lane County booth at Alton Baker Park.

“The current government recommendation is adults should get at least two-and-a-half hours of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity each week, such as brisk walking,” said Alexa Shook, director of PacificSource Healthy Life. “Walk It Off Wednesdays can help Lane County residents reach that weekly goal, while reducing their risk for high blood pressure, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and diabetes in the process.”
