More Than 1,500 Duck and Beaver Fans Pledge to “Go Healthy” in 2014 Pacificsource Healthy Life Civil War Challenge

Oregonians’ commitment to living healthier raises $10,000 for Oregon nonprofits

(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.)—While the 2014 Civil War match-up between the rival Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers resulted in victory for the visiting Ducks, the more than 1,500 Oregonians who took part in the fourth annual PacificSource Healthy Life Civil War Challenge have something to cheer no matter their allegiance: They are all winning at living healthier.

In the off-field battle to determine who is healthier, Ducks fans edged out the Beavers by 114 pledges. But a 35 percent increase in overall participation year over year and a $10,000 donation to four Oregon charities resulted in a touchdown for healthier communities.

“More and more Oregonians each year, no matter what team they root for, are coming together with the common goal of living healthier by incorporating small but meaningful changes into their daily routines,” said Alexa Shook, director of Healthy Life for PacificSource. “And while the Healthy Life Civil War Challenge only lasts for a month, the HealthyLifeChallenge.org site is a year-round resource for ideas on how we can all incorporate healthier living into our everyday lives.”

From Oct. 19 through Nov. 26, Ducks, Beavers, and Oregonians statewide united in friendly competition to encourage, achieve, and take an active role in healthy living. By pledging to take part in the PacificSource Healthy Life Civil War Challenge, participants took steps toward making themselves and their community healthier, while raising funds for four Oregon non-profits in the process.

Over the past month, 1,510 Oregonians visited HealthyLifeChallenge.org and pledged to take the PacificSource Healthy Life Civil War Challenge, which asked participants to incorporate one of the following healthy habits:

  • Get Moving: Add 30 minutes of physical activity per day
  • Eat Healthy: Eat at least five servings of fruit and veggies per day
  • Kick the Habit: Go smoke and tobacco free
  • Relax: Get eight hours of sleep each night or practice deep breathing or other relaxation techniques for a few minutes each day

All participants in the 2014 Healthy Life Civil War Challenge helped to raise $10,000 for four Oregon nonprofits that provide prevention and wellness programs by selecting from one of the following beneficiaries: the Linus Pauling Institute - Healthy Youth Program of Corvallis ($2,086), Girls on the Run in Portland ($2,510), the Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth in Eugene ($3,397), and Health Beginnings of Central Oregon ($2,007).
