Heart Attack Awareness

0415_Apple with heart_webA heart attack strikes someone about every 34 seconds in America. A heart attack occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the arteries that supply the heart with blood, and blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely. Knowing the warning signs of a heart attack can help save a life-maybe even your own!

Warning Signs

  • Chest discomfort - Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Other upper body discomfort - Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath - You may experience shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs - Other symptoms may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

While heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in America, it is preventable.

Prevention

  • Ask your primary care provider (PCP) about your personal risk for heart disease.
  • Quit using tobacco or e-cigarettes.
  • Move! Just walking for 30 minutes a day can dramatically reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke.
  • Modify your diet, if needed. You can do this through limiting portion sizes, eating more fruits and vegetables, eating whole grains, and limiting unhealthy fats and cholesterol.
