Health Insurance Guide

Decide which plans and companies might meet your needs.

Ask yourself the following questions to help determine which health insurers and plan types would work best for you and your family.

Do you have any chronic health conditions?

Many health insurers offer disease management programs to help members living with chronic conditions. At PacificSource, we offer our Condition Support Program for members with asthma, diabetes, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, or juvenile diabetes. Our AccordantCare rare disease management and specialty pharmacy programs provide individual support and coordination for our members with certain rare diseases, or those requiring injectable medications or biotech drugs. We also partner with local agencies to offer a six-week chronic disease self-management workshop to help members with chronic conditions self-manage their condition. Do you need access to healthcare in different locations?

If you travel frequently or have a family member away at college, you’ll want to be sure the health plan you’re considering includes an out-of-area provider network or travel benefits. PacificSource members have access to the First Health Network if they live or travel outside our service area.

Does the health plan provide reliable service to its customers?

Do they pay claims quickly? Answer phones promptly? Provide accurate information when and where you need it? Test the plan’s service yourself by calling their customer service line with a few questions.

Are you willing to get a referral from your primary care doctor to see a specialist?

If so, you might want to consider an HMO plan among your other options.

Are you willing to track spending, save receipts, and file claims to save money?

If so, a consumer-directed health plan might be a great choice.

Are you self-employed or do you own a small business?
