Children’s Wellness Program Expanded

Based on the success of our free children’s health program, HealthKicks, we have expanded it to include six-year-old children. Previously, it was only offered to nine-year-olds. Invitations have been sent to the children covered by a PacificSource medical plan who will turn six or nine during 2011. The letters explain the program and how parents can enroll their children.

HealthKicks is designed to promote healthy behaviors. Children who enroll in the program will receive five age-appropriate, educational activity books by mail throughout the year, as well as a pack of colored pencils with the first mailing. Each fun, engaging book focuses on a health education topic, such as tobacco, nutrition, fitness, general health, and dental health. The information and activities in the books are based on well-established practices and guidelines for healthy living. Parents will find that the books can help them start conversations with their children about health issues, as well as help teach healthy behaviors.

Surveys reveal positive results. In 2010, approximately 20 percent of our nine-year-old members participated in HealthKicks. To evaluate the program, we sent a satisfaction survey to enrolled children and their parents. The survey results showed that the educational activity books made an impact on the healthy behaviors of the children. The survey found:

  • 100 percent of parents would recommend this program to the parents of other nine-year-old children.
  • 61 percent of parents rated the program 7 or higher on a scale of 1 to 10, in terms of their child’s enjoyment.
  • 59 percent of parents indicated that they have noticed healthy changes in their child since completing the program.
  • 90 percent of children enjoyed the program.
  • 95 percent of children would recommend the program to their friends.
  • 67 percent of children indicated that they have healthier habits after completing the program.

PacificSource is proud to offer programs, such as HealthKicks, that make a positive difference in the health and well-being of our members.
